V For Vendetta (Widescreen Edition)(2006)
From the Box: "Who is the man who hides his scarred face behind
a mask? Hero or madman? Liberator or oppressor? Who is V- and who will join
him in his daring plot to destroy the totalitarian regime that dominates his
nation?"
What You Get: The movie translation of the
graphic novel/comic series of the same name, it's the story of a futuristic
London, taken over by a fascist regime in the wake of bio terrorism (on a
global level?). The regime has taken complete control of it's citizens lives,
leaving them in fear and powerless in the wake of it's Chancellor.
Until V blows up the Old Bailey building.
V, dressed in full Guy Fawkes attire, seems goal oriented to finish what his
likeness-sake set out to do centuries before: blow up Parliment. But more
so he wants to gain revenge on those who made him who he is, those who have
murdered countless in the name of control, power, and wealth. It's a vendetta
and it's a revolution.
Evey Hammond, a girl living in this world, is caught in V's wake, her world
being torn away for her as the truth because visable again.
The movie is epic, and the movie is a statement: "The people should not
fear the government, the government should fear it's people."
Movie Rating: 5 (of 5) This movie is a must see. If you value freedom, and you want to know what happens when the government chooses to sacrifice your freedom for their gains, this movie must be viewed. More so, this movie breaks the rules actually being better than it's source material in many ways, by basic comparison. As I said in my review of the graphic novel the story needed streamlining, and this does just that. It gets to the heart of the matter, creating a symbolic message and political piece while abandoning the weaker plot threads. This movie, of course, stands far better when you haven't read the book, better because you don't find yourself going "but what about this and that?!" Even still, for what it edits out, it makes up for in the visual and the soul. Must see.
DVD Features:
DVD Rating: 2(of 5) Pretty much a bareboned version of it. I think there's another version, so I'd reccomment getting your hands on that on. This movie deserves a stronger treatment.
