Saw III: Unrated/Widescreen (2006)

From the Box: "Jigsaw has disappeared.
"Along with his new apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith), the puppet-master behind the cruel, intricate games that have terrified a community and baffled police has once again eluded captue and vanished. While the city detectives scramble to locate him, Doctor Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh) and Jeff Reinhart (angus Macfadyen) are unaware that they are about to become the latest pawns on his vicious chessboard."

What You Get: You start with the cops, a few bodies, and then a third of the way in the focus changes quickly to Dr Denlon, who has been captued for the purpose of keeping Jigsaw alive, and Jeff, who is to be put through tests because his kid got ran over and he is to confront all parties invloved. But wait, there's more! Amanda, we find, is a sick, sadistic bitch (who knew, she seemed so nice), and has basically taken over the "family" business while Jigsaw gets back on his feet (or painfully dies depeneding on how you look at it). As the story progresses you ask yourself who's connected to who, why this person or that person, what's the twist? I'm not here to spoil, so I'll simply say some things you'll see a mile a way and others leave you guessing till the last minute.
And don't worry, plenty of creative, disturbing, painful, gruesome, straight-up nausitating deaths and tortures!

Now there's 3 keys things to take in when you watch this on DVD, and really you must follow the rules.

  1. Watch Saw 1 & 2 before you see this... withen the same week if you can. This move is TOTALLY a sequel, and basically ties up a lot of loose ends from the previous two. There are many flashbacks in this, mostly to things before and after events in the first two, and if your memory is like as bad as mine you might scratch your head and say "wauh?". This movie wraps up the series, completing the series in fact.
  2. Watch on a nice, big television. I watched this on a sad little 19" and found the movie too dark (in lighting). I know it's intentional and I'm sure it adds to the theatrical experience, but at home it just makes it hard to follow everything going on.
  3. Bring a strong stomach if you don't like missing a second. Brain surgery... in detail. Ugh.

Movie Rating: 2.5 (of 5) Until I can fullfill the first two keys set for watching this movie that's the best I can give. I just felt I didn't remember enough (and see enough) to follow and enjoy. This flick isn't shitty, persay, but it's not a stand alone... not even close. If you like (and maybe even own) Saw & Saw II you should probably add it to your collection. If you don't like them or haven't seen them go rent Hostel or some other torture flick.
*When I do watch all 3 again I'll be sure to re-rate this one.

DVD Features:

  • Traps of Saw III
  • Props of Saw III
  • Director's Diary
  • 2 Commentary tracks (one with Director & Producers, the other more technical guys)
  • Deleted scenes
  • English & Spanish Subtitles
  • Trailers

DVD Rating: 2(of 5) Just your average, basic features. This isn't barebones, but it doesn't really have anything you want to bother watching unless you really dig this flick. I didn't even bother with any of these, and I always watch the deleted scenes and usually watch the creative shit. So call me generous today.
